Mexican Navy
Why a picture of a sailing ship, you might ask? If you look closely, you’ll notice the name is a Nahuatl word.

The Mexican navy has a tall ship used for training. We didn’t know it was going to be visiting Seward during our stay there. I’d tell you about our visit to the ship and then going out drinking with the crew that night, but I can’t. Mostly because it didn’t happen…
Wildlife on the water
Because we hadn’t gotten enough of boats on the cruise (and because I had kept talking about trying to see whales… we found out later the humpbacks had started their trip to Hawaii already for the winter), we scheduled another day cruise, this time out of Seward.
And it didn’t disappoint…

We saw 2 species of puffins, some mures, guillemots as well.
We saw another fin whale but I wasn’t fast enough to get good pictures or video. And we saw more orcas! This pod stayed around the boat for some time after the captain turned off the engines to prevent collisions. We were just drifting while the orcas swam around the boat. At one point we were surrounded, with some males on one side and females with a calf on the other side of the boat. It was one of the most incredible animal encounters I’ve had. I did get some good views of these, but the video below was shared by another passenger who happened to be standing in a better spot (I apologize that I didn’t get her name to credit her).
After that, the scenery seemed to be an afterthought… Ok. Not really.

Oh, and there were some glaciers too.

We had a great day! We arrived back to the pier in time to get back to the cabin before dark, build a fire in the stove, and settle in for the night.
