What the Last 4 Months Before a Sabbatical Actually Look Like

When people imagine long-term travel, they picture destinations.

What they don’t see is the months leading up to departure.

The Overlapping Logistics

Flights, housing, visas, school planning, medical care, work transitions — all happening at once.

Each task is manageable.

Together, they require constant attention.

Closing a Life (Temporarily)

Preparing your home for someone else.

Cleaning out food.

Packing personal belongings.

Letting go of routines.

These are small actions that carry unexpected emotional weight.

Professional Transitions

Stepping away from work means ensuring continuity.

Patients, responsibilities, and systems need thoughtful handoff.

This part requires care and intention.

The Mental Load

The planning itself becomes a second job (this is my hobby by choice, but it would be super taxing if I didn’t enjoy it):

decision fatigue

constant coordination

long to-do lists

balancing current responsibilities

Holding Two Realities

We feel:

excited overwhelmed grateful stretched

All at once.

This stage isn’t glamorous.

But it’s where the foundation is built.

And it’s what makes the experience possible.
